Abstract
Introduction: This section defines collage and describes my long involvement with this technique. The introduction also discusses the specific content with which I am involved and my relation to both Black culture and the mostly white art world in which I participate. Collage: Evolution of Process and Content: This section describes the process, techniques, and content of my work. Intuition, sewing, drawing, painting, collage and assemblage are used to express personal and family history and issues of social context. Windows: Evolution of Process and Content: This section is the main focus of the statement and discusses the windows in depth, their symbolic references and the development of the imagery from an earlier installation - "The Gospel and the Storefront Church." The history of the Black Church, the symbol of the cross, writing, and imagery in my work are examined in this section. Each piece in the Master of Fine Art exhibition is described and discussed. Conclusion: The conclusion summarizes the issues developed in my work, its social and personal context and the methods which I used as expressive tools.
