Abstract

Serial killers are not a new occurrence. But, only during the twentieth century has serial killing become such a wide spread phenomenon and received such large amounts of publicity. The female serial killer has seemed to flourish during the twentieth century. The female serial killer have always been present in society, but until recently almost completely ignored. It would seem that until recently only male serial killers existed. The male serial killer has always received large amounts of publicity and fanfare. But the male serial killer is also caught quickly and in the public eye. The female serial killer is dismissed by the media and society alike, and is able to kill for long periods of time before being apprehended. This apprehension follows many deaths and many years of killing. The female serial killer is detected and apprehended at a rate slower than that of the male serial killer due to three factors. First, the female serial killer chooses her weapons carefully and uses those that are hard to detect, allowing for clandestine murders. Second, the female serial killer murders those that she is familiar with and has close contact to. Third, society, law enforcement, and the media discount females as serial killers.
