Abstract

"Wayang" consists of a series of wall installations, each piece representing a character from the traditional Malaysian puppet theatre. This story-telling tradition, performed by manipulating light and shadow, allows for a wide range of transformation in narrative, form, and color. Inspired by the wayang story based on the Ramayana epic that tells of Prince Rama, his banishment to the forest, the kidnapping of his wife Sita, and her eventual rescue from the hand of the evil king Rawana, I decided to create my own interpretation of these mythical characters.
