Abstract

This capstone project explores the significance of social justice in counselling and examines how counsellors can operationalize social justice advocacy as part of multicultural counselling competencies. Counsellors play an integral role in supporting the lives of marginalized individuals. This capstone highlights the various ways a counsellor can support clients besides conventional individual counselling. Many frameworks offer insight into operationalizing social justice advocacy, which helps fill the gap in the literature. This project contributes to counselling psychology by supporting new counsellors with a better understanding of how to be effective advocates for clients inside and outside the counselling room. Finally, this capstone explores the various methods to change the curriculum in graduate programs moving forward to enhance the learning for aspiring counsellors to learn how to incorporate social justice advocacy into their work.
