Abstract
Music therapy and reminiscence therapy have individually been shown to alleviate depression and anxiety, decrease agitation and aggression, and improve cognitive functioning, especially amongst the elderly population. This study examines the effects of combined music reminiscence therapy on adults and older adults living with comorbid medical and psychiatric diagnoses. Specifically, this study examines the effects of participating in music reminiscence therapy on quality of life, depression, aggression, mental status, and group identification as part of an activity program while living in a residential healthcare facility. This study found several trends that are worth further investigation, including an improvement in quality of life and a decrease in depression. These findings may help promote quality of life and well-being for those living in long-term healthcare facilities. Further research should examine additional program activities for engaging a diverse population to promote mental and physical activity and well-being.
