Abstract
The goal of this study was to isolate the elements necessary for a sound system of physical control and intellectual access for historic photograph collections by examining a variety of methods. A case study approach was used to collect information.
The interview instrument that was developed included questions about the physical control and intellectual access methods employed at the site as well as background of the institution and the historic photograph collection.
The six sites that were chosen reflected an overall diversity in the size of the collection, the type of institution and the method of arrangement and description.
The conclusions reached as a result of this study can be described as three characteristics: the consistent application of a single methodology to an entire historic photograph collection that is flexible enough to meet the demands made on it and that encourages the preservation of the collection as a result.
