Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify factors which contribute to the continuation of kindergarten retention, a common practice proven to be unproductive in furthering student academic success. The recent research regarding the effectiveness/ineffectiveness of kindergarten retention is outlined. In this qualitative study, in-depth interviews were conducted with thirteen kindergarten and first-grade teachers and three school administrators using a semi-structured questionnaire. Using a thematic approach, this study identified the beliefs and assumptions of teachers and administrators and defined the factors that influenced decisions to retain kindergarten students. In addition, the researcher identified strategies as potential effective alternatives to kindergarten retention.
