Abstract

As children, we naturally express creativity through play. But as adults, we often lose permission to express ourselves in this innate and spontaneous way. Our culture tells us play is a waste of time and that creative modes of expression—dance, story, song, music, drama, poetry, and visual art—should be reserved for those interested in professional pursuits. Furthermore, outside of therapeutic settings, there is not much support for adults to explore creative forms of play. Facilitated creative play in a safe and non-judgmental recreational setting is a much-needed contrast to traditional, sometimes health-damaging, forms of adult play. Creative play offers adults a return to spontaneity, a reconnection with life, revived health and wholeness, and a pathway to renewed joy.
