Abstract

This study looks at the double effects of sibling incest and being an adult female child of an alcoholic. Alcoholism and sibling incest constitute a double effect phenomenon on the female individual and her subsequent male-female relationships. A brief history and literature review of incest and Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACA) are presented. A case history was audio recorded during two interviews of a woman who has survived both experiences. The literature review and case history are compared and contrasted. The findings of this comparison support the hypothesis of this study: the attachment and developmental stages of childhood and adolescence are disrupted and cause problems in subsequent male-female relationships; and that women with these experiences tend to stay in abusive relationships longer. Recommendations are made that more studies be made of these aftereffects on a larger scale.
