Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to explore the therapeutic methods that are used in current sex practice with heterosexual couples wanting to enhance their sexual interactions. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four key informants, i.e., 4 sex therapists. Subsequently, phenomenologically-oriented content analysis was performed on interview transcripts. Four major components were identified: continual assessment, integration, process of therapy, and therapist personality factors. Several second-order themes were found. Clinical implications of these findings are considered, including the need for couples therapists to acquire comfort and skills. The research was a small scale qualitative study carried out in Vancouver as part of a Masters degree requirement.
