Abstract
Research identifies eating disorders as a biopsychosocial with the highest mortality rate of all psychiatric illnesses. Using the process of autoethnography, my personal experience recovering from OSFED with a chronic illness is compared with current literature on the subject to explore some of the barriers to recognition, access to treatment, and recovery to eating disorders. Exploration of the interconnectedness and additional challenges inherent in balancing a chronic illness and disordered eating from the perspective of the chronic illness as a predisposing factor. This research also identifies and explores the relationship between disordered eating and culture. Enhancing education and understanding of the nuances associated with eating disorders, both within professional and personal communities, may help to alleviate barriers to treatment and address issues related to stigma that exacerbate the challenges of recovery.
