Abstract

This study is an investigation into the ancient names of the hexagrams of the I Ching. It draws upon standard etymological resources that are generally accessible to Western readers who have little or no familiarity with Chinese. The meanings of the ancient names (they are actually drawings) are compared to the traditional interpretations of the hexagrams as presented by Richard Wilhelm. The relationship between the traditional interpretation and the ancient name is in most cases quite clear and straightforward, yet for many of the hexagrams there are significant discrepancies and even some inconsistencies.
