Abstract
The success of Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) programs relies heavily on participant behavior change and overall program satisfaction. Daily self-management is necessary to stave off acute and chronic complications resulting from uncontrolled diabetes. A literature review evaluating diabetes outpatient education programs and the use of behavior, change models as they pertain to Type II Diabetes Mellitus self-management reveals a need for more integrative models that encourage positive self-care. A Holistic Model has been developed to provide a foundation for diabetes outpatient education programs. This model integrates Western medical treatment with complimentary care through a patient empowerment approach.
