Abstract

A survey of out-of-the-body experiences (OBEs) was conducted among students of John F. Kennedy University (Orinda, California). Sign-up sheets were made available to the students for them to sign their name and address if they though they have had an OBE. A 42-item questionnaire was mailed to all the students that signed. Items asked respondents questions about: 1) specific OBE phenomenological characteristics (e.g., ESP, seeing deceased people, going out of the body by the head), 2) altered states of consciousness and cognitive related practices (e.g., lucid dreams, dream recall, meditation), 3) attitudes (belief in ESP and life after death), 4) demographic variables. Questions in categories two through five were asked in terms of time before the respondent's OBEs.
