Abstract
My exploration will include an inquiry into the nature of these mythic stories, what they are and how they function. I will also look at why myth is a necessary part of our lives no matter where, or when we live.
When I began this inquiry I assumed I would find specific purposes for including the literary motif of 'divine dishonor' in the stories of different traditions. Some scholars do attribute a specific purpose to this motif, or perhaps I should say a specific reaction to this motif, but the answer varies with the different scholars. My conclusions were not so specific. I was surprised at the sweeping, yet individual, nature of the answers I found. One of the most wonderful aspects of this kind of research is that the researcher is so often surprised by the results. The following pages map my journey of exploration into the realm of 'Divine Dishonor' as it is found in three rich traditions. The 'treasure' at the end was worth the long and difficult voyage.
