Abstract
In the increasingly diverse educational system within the United States, students, teachers, districts, and parents are struggling to create an environment that promotes education while teaching students to communicate across cultures. As a second year teacher I conducted this emic study to attempt to determine the effects of multicultural curricula on a diverse kindergarten class and its teacher when the curricula is integrated into a district's standards-based curricula. The data collected revealed a significant improvement in student relations, as well as improved academic performance. My overall teaching approach changed dramatically during the study, greatly impacting the results as I influenced my students. This research details the methods by which a new teacher can develop an individualized multicultural curriculum. It also sheds light on the need for greater district involvement in increasing the number of multicultural classrooms and schools available to support students, teachers, and families.
