Abstract
To determine the effectiveness of the mandatory referral of First Offender Drinking Drivers to meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous in Contra Costa County, California, the driving records of 204 first offenders between January 1982 and January 1986 were compared six months after completion of their First Offender Program, to determine whether there were differences in re-arrests between 102 arrested before the addition of the Alcoholics Anonymous mandate and 102 arrested after. It was found that the rate of re-arrest and the time between initial arrest and re-arrest were the same for both groups. Further research was recommended in the direction of First Offender Drinking Driver sanctions and a more detailed study of the results, with particular attention directed at those sanctions producing the most positive outcome.
