Abstract
The topic of orientation materials in a modern art museum involves many issues. It involves the visitors, the organization of the staff and the nature of modern art. The purpose of this study was to examine the issues involved in the use of orientation materials in museums that exhibit modern art and to develop an alternative form of orientation that the staffs of museums could offer to adult visitors. This study examined the history of educational philosophies that support and oppose orientation materials, analyzed who adult museum visitors are and their needs for orientation, described different forms of orientation materials used in museums and explored reasons why the staff of museums choose to use or not to use these materials. Based on the results of this investigation, a model of an alternative form of orientation was designed and created.
