Abstract
This thesis is a study to answer a question posed by numerous educators and the public affiliated with the field of education. “Is there a correlation between parental involvement and student achievement? Although numerous studies have been conducted of a similar nature, this researcher wanted to research and understand the correlation between parental involvement and academic achievement. The quantative research was conducted by using a survey to gather data.
The survey was conducted by using twenty-five parents whose children attend the public school system and parents who take their children to religious education classes. The participants were chosen using a convenience and cluster sampling of parents in the Orange County and the Los Angeles County area of a diverse socio economic background. The study was carried out using a survey in the form of a questionnaire with permission of the respective administrations.
The Methodology used for conducting and evaluating the data was the concept of relationship studies. Initially, a letter of consent went out to the participants to reassure them of the authenticity and the ethical nature of the experiment. The questionnaire consisted of ten generic questions, which ensured confidentially of the parents. No personal data was requested of the parent, which brought the parents to a certain level of comfort. The data collected and tabulated helped the researcher form her conclusions regarding her hypothesis of there being a correlation between parental involvement and success in academic achievement.
This researchers intentions were that the outcome of this research thesis would help teachers and schools plan better strategies for involving parents in their children’s academic, endeavors resulting in greater success in their children’s education.
