Abstract
This study provides an overview of finger, sole and toe print patterns and classification methods. The study demonstrates that footprints contain unique and permanent ridge detail that resembles that of fingerprints. It also shows that footprints, correctly made, can provide as much individualistic information regarding an individual as fingerprints. Because of the latter, this study examines the utilization of infant footprints as an alternative method for adult identification in cases where fingerprints are not available.
In order for footprints to be used effectively as a useful alternative identification method, certain criteria must be met. It is these criteria which the project intends to present and examine. To do this, the study investigates if all hospitals within the United States take baby footprints as an identification security. The study also looks at the best method for infant footprinting. Furthermore, and most importantly, the project makes obvious the usefulness of properly made footprints in cases of adult identification, and the ways in which this information can be stored, accessed and retrieved.
