Abstract

The study of humor, although not totally absent, is severely underrepresented in the museum literature. However, across other disciplines there is significant humor research that spans many decades, even as far back as Plato and Aristotle. Works in psychology, physiology, sociology, advertising, education and workplace relationships were consulted for this master's project, as they seemed the most relevant to museum professionals in understanding how humor might manifest or function. In addition, studying all museum disciplines would be too large an undertaking, and so science (or science-related) disciplines were chosen to narrow the focus. The main question to be answered was: How is humor being (and how can humor be) used in the museum setting to communicate science to the public?
