Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate current practices of standards for art museum collections databases and collections information on the Internet. The project examined current on-line collections information in art museums via the Internet, and investigated standards implementation in constructing collections database and putting it on the Internet. This project provides initial criteria and guidelines for art museums that want to put the collections information on the Internet. The project resulted in improved methods for those who have already launched collections databases on the Internet without any serious study of public access. Using a standard produced by the Gil (the CDWA), the project produced a model database and on-line catalog, thereby assuring a reliable set of standards that can be utilized by art museum communities. Another tangible results is products that now comprise a significant portion of multimedia and cataloging, which is actually used in the Berkeley Art Museum's on-line program.
