People living with dementia (PLwD), researchers, and counsellors have identified the benefits of counselling for maintaining mental health. However, counselling is under-recognized as a first-choice support for people living with any stage of dementia. Although few randomized controlled trials exist documenting the efficacy of 'talking therapies' for PLwD, significant qualitative research supports improved access and the recommendation of counselling for PLwD. The counselling community needs to recognize and promote their role in improving the mental health of PLwD.
