How do we define success for a high school basketball team with respect to program aims and outcomes? What are the steps and challenges that a Head Coach faces in building a successful High School Basketball program? Many high school and college basketball programs across North America have been able to build successful programs that have enjoyed continued success year in and year out. Meanwhile, other programs have enjoyed flashes of success but have not been able to sustain that success for a long period of time. Based on researching the most successful program builders in college and high school basketball, I have discovered there are seven major factors that can influence a program in becoming successful. The seven factors were (1) Vision, (2) Plan of action, (3) Administration, (4) Support, (5) Infrastructure, (6) Building the team and (7) Foundation. The research problem will be investigated through a conceptual analysis and literature review of previous works completed by expert coaches and basketball program builders. The research has provided great insight and the factors that are vital to building a successful high school basketball program.
