Abstract
This thesis explored the area of achievement. There are some people who experience negative consequences associated with their achievement which is called a fear of success. Seven therapists answered a questionnaire regarding a client of theirs who feared success. Information was obtained about general demographics, affect, achievement, and therapeutic modalities.
There were some similarities of demographic information in the answers. There was information that women experienced negative affect after their achievement while the males experienced relatively little. The men and women had low self-esteem in regards to their achievement. This seems to indicate that the women were more honest about their negative feelings about achievement. Both the men and women experienced low self-esteem associated with their achievement while only the women experienced negative affect after their achievement. In this society men are not as able as women to express their feelings, so this may lead them to not fully experience their feelings. 40 The therapeutic modality section showed that the therapists used many types of therapy which, although different, contained many similar ideas: empathy and a here-and-now stance.
