Abstract
To begin this thesis with a zoetrope story is to evoke irony: a zoetrope is something that one might have encountered in a dusty roadside museum at the turn of the century. It is certainly not the stuff of 21st century blockbuster exhibits. However, it is a fitting example; the zoetrope of yesterday evolved into the film of today: a visual form that is incomplete, in many instances, without a soundtrack. We do not know how future exhibition technology may evolve, but as the cartoon zoetrope story illustrates, sound is appropriate in the even the most arcane museum displays. At this point in time, soundtracks for exhibitions seem novel. This thesis proposes that soundtracks may be an increasingly effective aspect of having much more to say in the exhibitions in the future.
