Abstract
This paper will introduce a holistic training program for licensed estheticians based on the philosophy of Integral Skin Health. Today's estheticians must face and meet many challenges if the field of esthetics is to remain viable outside of the medical profession. Integral Skin Health is based on Ken Wilber's Integral Theory, elevating the field of esthetics beyond its current narrow scope of product-based education. Integral Skin Health is designed to inform the esthetician about how thoughts, emotions, and perceptions influence skin health behaviors and how skin histology, science, and products play a role in skin health. It examines the impact of family and cultural worldviews and how government, monetary, and educational systems, including the environment, are interconnected in such a way as to impact skin health choices. Research demonstrates that skin-based health choices play a role in long-term health outcomes and that the skin can play a significant role in motivating the individual to opt for positive health choices. This paper will discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the esthetician, program implementation, and the future of the field of esthetics, including the advent of the Certified Integral Esthetician.
