The lifetime prevalence rates in community populations for adolescents and young adults who engage in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is between 13%-32%. There is no optimal counselling approach for working with NSSI, and few that are specifically designed for use in non-clinical populations. The Treatment for Self-Injurious Behaviours (T-SIB) is a behaviour-based approach that can be standalone or adjunctive, and combines psychoeducation, motivational interviewing, functional behaviour analysis and skill development. A review of T-SIB in the context of broader NSSI literature suggests its usefulness as a non-pathologizing and flexible methodology. However, its emphasis on behavioural change is limiting and I propose that T-SIB would be more effective as an adjunctive rather than standalone intervention so that nonbehavioural aspects of self-injurious behaviours are not overlooked.
