Abstract

The purpose of this master's project was to justify the increased business activities of nonprofits and to promote ethical standards for facility use programs that directly support museum missions. The objectives of this project were to describe funding trends for art museums in the United States, to identify the issues that arise when museums cultivate earned income, and to describe how facility use programs can advance museum missions while they earn income. The product for this master's project was a handbook to help organizationally mature art museums develop facility use programs. The handbook provided operational guidelines for the management of facility use programs and identified strategies for dealing with related issues such as the impact on staff workload, the potential for damage to the building and the collection, and the tax considerations that apply to the revenue.
