Abstract
This study attempts to examine adolescent high school clubs, their rituals and traditions, and investigate the psychodynamic impact of these influential groups on their youthful membership. Psychobiological developmental tasks are defined, the clubs descriptively assessed. Both positive and negative implications for adolescent development were found to be present as a result of club membership. For some adolescents,. the social club was supportive and familial assisting in separation-individuation from primary relationships. For others, it short-circuited certain aspects of individuation due to the emphasis on conformity and acceptable peer behavior.
