Abstract

In Websters' dictionary (1979) the word nourish means to "provide with sustenance necessary to life and growth" (p. 411). In this definition, there is no mention of food, yet it is about what will sustain life. Discovering one's natural breath can be the door that opens to a lifestyle of change, and can provide fuel for a process of eating more healthfully. It is especially powerful in helping busy people become more mindful and able to engage in self-inquiry. This paper describes a program designed for nutrition consultants and health educators who want to work with their clients to integrate sustainable lifestyle change, especially related to eating. I show how connecting with the breath increases somatic awareness, and how this will lead to reconnecting with the body's natural rhythm and drive to be healthy. Integrating such a practice into daily life changes how people nourish themselves.
