Abstract
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in females remains under-recognized and under-researched, with prevailing treatment models often privileging pharmacological and behavioural approaches while overlooking the relational and identity-based dimensions of the disorder. This capstone critically evaluates the effectiveness of psychodynamic psychotherapies in addressing the unique clinical and functional needs of females with a diagnosis of ADHD. Drawing on case studies, qualitative analyses, and thematic synthesis, the project explores how psychodynamic interventions support the reframing of self-perception, repair of relational ruptures, and development of adaptive coping strategies. Findings indicate that although symptom reduction in inattention and hyperactivity may be modest, psychodynamic approaches yield gains in emotional regulation, reflective functioning, and identity integration. The analysis underscores the importance of gender-responsive, trauma-informed, and relationally attuned care, positioning psychodynamic psychotherapies as potentially valuable complements to existing treatment modalities. Ultimately, this work contributes to the growing evidence base advocating for integrative, female-specific interventions that honour the complexity of female ADHD beyond symptom management. However, more evidence is needed to ensure relationally focused therapeutic options are available to this vulnerable population.
