This paper is an analytic literature review which investigates the effects of vicarious trauma on therapists. Eleven core articles were selected among a wide range of articles which focused on the concept of vicarious trauma. I discuss the origins of vicarious trauma, the necessary and sufficient conditions of therapy and discusses why vicarious trauma matters in the field of therapy. Next, various effects of vicarious trauma are identified among the research, followed by signals to comprehend the impact of the effects. Therapist responses are discussed within the literature review, as well as findings from the core eleven articles to increase knowledge around how therapists are impacted by vicarious trauma. This paper concludes with the incorporation of ethical principles, application to clinical practice and considerations for future research.
