This study examines possible connections between personality traits, as measured by the 16-PF, and the maintenance of sobriety one year after inpatient alcohol treatment. One hundred participants (56 men and 44 women) in an in-patient alcohol treatment program were tested with the 16-PF pretreatment, and their scores were later analyzed with respect to success (sober) or failure (non-sober) in maintaining sobriety for one year post-treatment. There was no significant difference in personality scores between the sober and non-sober women, but the sober and non-sober men had significant differences in the A scale (p<0.024) and the I scale (p<O.00l) . These findings suggest that there might be personality traits that correlate with success or failure in the maintenance of post-treatment sobriety in men. The identification of these traits in an alcoholic in treatment might allow for a more individually designed recovery plan.
