Abstract

This project investigates the role that science exhibits can play in stimulating non-biased parent-child interaction in children's museums. The purpose of this project is to identify and assess the potential that children's museums have in bridging the gap in science achievement among boys and girls. Recommendations as well as two products look to children's museums and parents as gateways through which the gender gap can be narrowed. A session proposal for the Association of Children's Museums (ACM) 2002 InterActivity Conference includes researchers and museum professionals who use children's museums as a forum for finding ways to reduce the gender gap in science. In addition, an informational brochure for parents, to be available in children's museums, is intended to help parents provide opportunities and experiences for their daughters in science. By reaching all groups involved--parents, museums professionals, and children--this project strives to do its part to create unbiased environments for parent-child interaction and as a result, reduce the gender gap in science.
