dc.description.abstractBullying in schools has become an epidemic problem in today's society. More and more children are being told they are "bullies" and are victimizing their peers. As a school system, one must wonder why have more and more of our students become labeled as "bullies." As counsellors in the school system should we be looking into these higher, alarming rates of children in our schools being labelled as "bullies?" How does a school address this issue? If we as school counsellors look deeper into the problem of bullying in schools we may see that our aggressive students, who we are labeling as "bullies," are actually victims themselves. This paper will examine some background behind why a child may be responding in such an aggressive way towards their peers. As it turns out our aggressive students may, in turn, be victims as well, dealing with different types of abuse, violence or neglect at home and therefore; responding to the abuse in such a way that comes out as aggression towards others at school. As school counsellors, we need to be aware of all aspects of our student's lives and not only be prepared to help the children who are targets of this aggression, but the aggressors themselves. This paper will also look at how schools are responding to the "bullies" in the schools and how school's as a whole can help support and guide all of our students to responding in a more positive way, while getting those children who are being victimized at home the help and support they need.
