Abstract
My work is an exploration of allegorical and mythic power which seeks the balance between body and garment, sacred and theatrical.
I use torn, cut and layered pellon, a non-woven interfacing material, which is then stiffened with glue, shaped and colored to create what I have come to call "Goddesses" - symbolic shapes based on ritual garments which refer to and celebrate the female spirit and the female body. They coalesce my interest in myths, legends, theatre, religion and ritual.
My work has evolved in the course of my graduate work from flat wall forms to free-standing sculptures. Each piece develops over an extended period of time and is often completely transformed when finished. I create strong, simple shapes which provide a canvas for surface imagery. The transformation of materials is an important element in my work, and exploits transparency, layering, light and edges.
My Goddesses embody states of mind, speak of life, death, mystery, freedom, rapture and energy. They are my connection between art and life.
