Abstract

Developmental disabilities have been linked to criminality for years. As a result, the criminal justice system has been a source for mental health services for those with developmental disorders. Previous research has focused on incarcerated or hospitalized developmentally disabled individuals. Yet, more recently there have been numerous releases of these individuals into the community due to developmental center closures, acts, and lawsuits creating a move towards community integration. Because of this, there is a need to research the antecedents of developmentally disabled offenders in community based populations. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to identify if: a correlation exist between being a developmentally disabled offender and placement in a developmental center; a correlation exist between offending and being schizophrenic; a correlation exist between offending and having a high developmental level (76%-100%); and if a correlation exist between being a non-violent offender and being in a behavior management program.
