Abstract

The intention of this project was to research various types of lie detection methods. Juries were also analyzed to determine their accuracy rates. Once analyzed, a review of each method and their various limitations were discussed in order to determine if there could be anything done to increase the accuracy rates of the method. Inspired by the copious amounts of studies available, this research addresses the conflicting results and differences in opinions as to which technigue has higher accuracy rates, or which cues are considered valid or bogus. Nevertheless, with all the previous studies available, there still has yet to be a method to gain the “general acceptance” required by Daubert’s standards. Once research can provide a studyrand a method that can be considered a validated science by the field, lie detection methods can be utilized within the courts systems. Various techniques are evaluated and ascertained whether additional training with it offers greater abilities in detecting deceit. This study will hopefully be used as a foundation to spark new interest with further studies with the recommended method and to encourage law enforcement agencies to utilize the techniques available to enhance officer’s abilities.
