Abstract
This thesis comprises two parts, a journey and a journal, and describes the cyclic processes of life as seen personally and cross-culturally through the symbolism of the wheel. The journey is my personal history and travels: the intuitive and creative experiences which reveal my process as an artist, my tools of growth and transformation, the shaping forces which inspired my symbolic quest. Woven into the journey are the cross-cultural interpretations of the wheel. These historical and traditional finds provide a balance for my personal experiences and give evidence of the wheel's universal impact on the practical and sacred life of man. The journal is composed of the manifestations of my personal history and travels; it is a presentation of visual art, poetry, prose commentaries and observations; reflective of my symbolic quest. The works appear in the same sequential order as my gallery exhibition of June 17, 1984 and simulate the cycle of life as seen in the design and motion of the wheel.
