Abstract
Domestic violence is the attempt to establish power and control of an individual (spouse, former spouse, minor, or significant other), through the use of physical, emotional, verbal, or sexual abuse. Without intervention the severity of the incidents escalate and can result in death. Accurate risk assessment is an important tool in evaluating the lethality of the batterer, the level of violence and danger to the victim, and the exposure of violence to the child. For years, domestic violence was considered a family secret. Today, with changing legislation and community awareness, many people are looking closely at the cause and offering valuable assistance to those in need.
