Abstract

This study explored the relationship between self-reported tendency to eat in response to negative affect and impulsivity in individuals with binge eating disorder (BED). Subjects were participants in a commercial weight loss program who volunteered to complete demographic and diagnostic questionnaires. Subjects were diagnosed based on the information gathered on the Questionnaire on Eating and Weight Patterns (Spitzer et al., 1992). This study compared individuals with BED and weight-matched non-eating disordered CONTROLs. A tentative relationship was found between emotional eating and impulsivity in individuals with BED, but the same relationship was not found in CONTROLs. There was no difference between individuals with BED and CONTROLs on overall levels of impulsivity. These findings suggest that the possible relationship between emotional eating and impulsivity may be a phenomenon particular to binge eating disorder
