Abstract
Using this idea as a starting point, I formulated my research objectives and the purpose for my master's project, aiming to discover whether the professional contingent workforce impacts organizational memory in medium- to large-sized art museums and to give museums the preliminary tools to understand this significant trend in human resources management. To inform these questions, I completed a literature review and a case study of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). As a part of this case study, I first analyzed financial and human resource records of the museum and spoke to representatives from the finance and human resources departments to understand the scope of SFMOMA's use of the professional contingent workforce. Second, I interviewed five recent entrants to the museum workforce at SFMOMA; five current or former employees who have worked for the museum at the senior staff level on a long-term basis defined as eight years or more; and five individuals who are, or have been, a part of the contingent workforce and have worked with SFMOMA in some capacity. Finally, I interviewed two museum consultants, not associated with SFMOMA, to gain insight into larger issues and industry trends regarding museums and their use of the professional contingent workforce.
