Abstract
Since an individual's self-concept is based upon his or her experiences, and the history of being Black in America is one of being made to feel inferior, it is commonly assumed that Black Americans have somehow internalized this value and created a lived experience of inferiority. It seems inevitable.
The author of this paper, a Black man, understands and recognizes the weight of this history on his people, and yet attempts to promote the possibility of a healthy identification for Black Americans that holds the presence of a shared community. Expanded psychological understanding of Black people's experiences can provide the means of developing a powerful worldcentric perspective from which to live meaningful and effective lives.
