Abstract

Having introduced the idea that a reality can be "chosen" brings me to the major theme of this paper: the transformation of one's reality through art. The central focus of this paper will be an exploration of some of the transformative processes involved in the creative experience. These processes will be examined through the concepts of beauty, duality, and the medium of painting. The first section, "Beauty as an Agent of Transformation", is an exploration of the nature of an experience of beauty. In the second section, "The Duality Principle In Painting: Polar Dynamics of Transformation", various manifestations of the duality principle as inherant forces within the creative process will be examined. In the third section, "Painting", I discuss my own creative process as a painter, the concept of truth with regard to painting, and spirituality in painting. The final section is a brief overview of the evolution of my aesthetic in painting and contains photographs of the ten paintings forming the visual portion of the thesis project.
