Abstract
This research focuses on the obstacles and hardships faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth in our schools and communities, with the intention of examining how to create an LGBTQ inclusive environment for gender questioning youth. Specifically, the study looks at how school counsellors can create an LGBTQ inclusive environment in our educational settings, with the primary recommendation being the development of a Gay-Straight Alliance. Studies show that individuals experiencing gender confusion are at increased risks for adverse mental health issues (Byrd and Hays, 2012). The purpose of this study is to determine the possible impacts of creating a school environment that truly promotes a safe, caring, supportive and inclusive school for all youth, regardless of gender/sexuality. The goal is to explore best practice through current literature and apply and supplement the research to the model that exists in School District 68 high schools. This will enable the researchers to identify possible benefits and areas of adjustment necessary for positive social and educational outcomes in the targeted demographic. It was established that School District 68 is progressive in their school policies, procedures, language, and general awareness of the issues surrounding gender questioning youth. The District is open to learning and engaging in dialogue to obtain a greater understanding of LGBTQ concerns. Despite the progressive nature of Nanaimo-Ladysmith Public Schools, currently a comprehensive LGBTQ model does not exist, nor is there specific training for teachers and support staff. The researchers are hopeful that their exploration and suggestions will become common practice within School District 68.
