Abstract

Abuse of the elderly has long been a private matter. Each year there are hundreds of thousands of elder people that are being abused, neglected and or exploited by family members and other care takers. As our society grows and lives longer so does our elderly population. Among that population, one of the fastest growing groups is the Latino population. Now more than ever, we as a society need to bring awareness to this issue and know how to identify risk factors for possible elder abuse. Public awareness and education are important in preventing abuse and neglect. It is important to identify signs and symptoms of abuse and know where help can be obtained. This project compares the awareness of certain groups based on gender, culture and age in order to gauge awareness to this topic. According to the data obtained in this project, there is not a significant difference based on culture, gender, or in which country one was born as it pertains to awareness and reporting of elder abuse.
