Abstract
The primary objective of this body of research is to determine whether middle-aged individuals receiving social support from their spouses manage stress more effectively than those without their spouses' support. The sample included eight married adults ages 45-60. The data collected through a questionnaire was used to determine whether, when support was given during stressful events, the spouse was adequate to mitigate daily stressors in one's adult life. The research determined that six out of the eight participants were in consensus about the nature of support being critical in creating a safe and loving environment around the stressful event. This body of research will support evidence that, as human beings, we need to be in a nurturing environment to manage everyday stressful events more effectively, especially when difficult situations continue to arise in our adult lives.
