Abstract

This thesis argues that it is important to establish procedures that protect the object, as well as a volunteer's personal attachment to the objects and their work. Communicating the need to protect and care for museum collections has become difficult for collections staff working in all small to medium history museums. With collections departments understaffed, and artifacts in danger of damage due to improper conditions, help from properly trained volunteers can be beneficial to the institution. Creating a policy for volunteers working among collections will be very useful for understaffed and overworked collections departments. A specifically designed program will help volunteers to assist with protecting the collections pieces by training them to pack, inventory, and handle the artifacts properly, relieving the collections staff to work on other important department task will be extremely beneficial to the museum.
