Abstract

It is a fact that our society is becoming increasingly violent. Violence and threats of violence in the workplace have increased at an alarming rate over the past several years. Employee assistance programs are receiving crisis calls to respond to workplace trauma at an alarming rate. Dealing with the impact of violence in the workplace can be extremely challenging for both organizations and the individuals who are victims of workplace violence. This study examined 1) violence in the workplace; 2) emotional and work related effects of violence in the workplace on the victim; 3) interventions made by the organization; 4) post-incident services used by the employee to aid "recovery"; and 5) barriers to returning victims to work after a critical incident of violence in the workplace. Literature reviewed also included research and theory related to Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, employee assistance programs, Critical Incident stress debriefing, current policies on workplace violence.
